A case is described of chickenpox in a young non-immunosuppressed adult, resulting in adult respiratory distress syndrome and hepatitis, which was successfully managed with artificial ventilation and vidarabine.

We describe a patient who presented with cryptococcosis and the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) as the initial manifestation of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This patient represents the first reported recovery from ARDS secondary to widespread cryptococcosis. We report a patient who developed adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis as an immune reconstitution disease. This complication occurred 14 days after the commencement of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for advanced HIV infection.
